Inventiveness

To invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk. -Thomas Edison

Looking at this topic I would think of it more as creativity. Everyone has some creavtive side to them whether it is in music, sports, the business world etc. We all have something in us that can be considered creative. But, where do we get this? I think it all start in school or the first place you learn things. Unlike places that have the more communist state, we have a country that is more free minded and willing to produce affective and creative ideas.

I learned very early that being creative is good thing to most people. In 4th grade we had a art contest to create a cover page for Iowa Savings Bonds. The most thoughtful and creative was the one who would win. Well my friend and I were the finalists, he represented the state with a field of corn and I went with a little different subject. He won, but that wasnt that big of deal to me. We were recognized by our teacher and faculty for having very creative and quality imaginations. It wasnt just that fact that we had to do this for class. It was that we had free roam to do what we wanted and we did this on our own as only 4th graders. We built something up from nothing and made it something great! I think this is one example from my life that shows that schools show praise for being inventive and creative.

Role Playing Affectiveness

Going back to the questions about the role playing situation. I believe this way of teaching is definitely a legitimate source for having students learn. I think it keeps the students in the discussion and gives the something to do besides sitting, listening and taking notes only. It gives the student something to think about and might give the more soft spoken kids a chance to say something they wouldnt say in other situations.

The advantages of a straight lecture is that a teacher can get direct points across and its less of a hassle than having to control a class. The disadvantages would be the students get bored easily of this type of learning and will eventually lose interest. They want to see entertainment and do something fun.

I think students should know basic skills. They need to know public speaking, especially in our situation. But in regards to needing to know exact things about a subject I dont think that is completely right. You can give a sheet of information, like we received, and the situation that is set up will work fine.

I liked what we did the other night. It kept everyone into class instead of sleeping or bored. Even though everyone didn't talk. It got people thinking about situation and like the "superintendent" said it had the emotions flowing.

PASSION

Education is not the filling of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire. W.B. Yeats

When it comes to good or great teachers I would say most of them had this quality about them. They were the ones who showed up early and left late. If you needed help, they were willing to give up their time to help you. They were the ones who wanted you to share their passion with you, so one day you might want to continue what they've started.

One of my best teachers that I can say who exuded tremendous amounts of passion was my baseball coach. A lot of guys had a tendency to be laid back or get bored at practice but Coach was the one to bring excitement to the field. You never really knew what he was going to do next. Things like telling random stories how stuff happened to him to getting angry and throwing stuff or simply just being engaged and super excited when he was trying to make a point. He was always doing something to show that he wanted to be there even when we didnt. I remember one time we had a film session and my swing wasnt looking the best. I really didnt think the point he was making was legitimate but he was going to make me see what I was doing wrong. He hopped up on one of the desks grabbed a bat from underneath and proceeded to show me what I did wrong. I played great after that because I really focused on what he was doing. That is what I call Passion when a teacher, coach, whoever is willing to go up and above the norm for a pupil to learn something.
